PCB board for Famicom/NES dumper/writer project.

Copying cartridges is always a two-step process, not 1:1. There is no "cartridge-to-cartridge" mode in one step without an intermediary file — it always involves first a dump (reading the original to a ROM file on the PC), then writing that file to the target medium.

• Read practically any Famicom/NES cartridge, regardless of the mapper.
• Write only to specific media adapted for this purpose: COOLGIRL (dedicated multicart by the same author), COOLBOY (chip AA6023, mapper 268 — cheap Chinese cartridges, cheaper versions require soldering), and UNROM-512 (RetroUSB, mapper 30).
• What you can't do: You cannot write a dumped game back onto a regular, original cartridge bought in a store — the vast majority of these use mask ROM (mask ROM), written once during silicon production, physically impossible to reprogram. This is a hardware limitation, not a software one.

Other practical applications:

• Writing/reading saves with a battery backup — continuing saved games between an emulator and a real console, and vice versa.
• Handling Famicom Disc System — reading/writing FDS disks via a drive with a RAM adapter.
• Reverse engineering unknown mappers.
