USB PD Trigger (or USB PD Decoy)

This is a small board that mimics a "smart" device (e.g., a phone), negotiating with a PD charger for the desired:

  • Voltage: 5V, 9V, 12V, 15V, or 20V
  • Current: up to 5A (up to 100W)

Thanks to this, you can "extract" higher voltage than the standard 5V from any USB-C PD charger and power, for example:

  • Raspberry Pi,
  • router,
  • older DC socket,

without the need for converters.

How does it work?

This is not "cheating" in an illegal sense – it is simply an exploit of the USB Power Delivery (PD) protocol, which was designed specifically for such negotiation.

The board communicates via the CC (Configuration Channel) lines in USB-C, requesting a specific power profile (PDO – Power Data Object).

Supported protocols:

  • PD 2.0,
  • PD 3.0,
  • PD 3.1,
  • QC 2.0,
  • QC 3.0,
  • QC 4,
  • QC 5.

Additional information:

  • Output voltage description: Configuration is done by shorting solder pads: 1, 2, 3, 4.
  • No short circuit: Default output is 5V.
