VIC-20 A/V Adapter – Audio/Video for Commodore VIC-20

Product Description

Adapter PCB for the Commodore VIC-20 computer, designed by Sven Petersen.

The adapter connects to the VIC-20's video/audio port and outputs the signal to widely available, ready-made A/V cables with RCA connectors — for both video (composite video) and audio. Unlike the versions for Atari XL/XE and C128, this adapter does not offer S-Video output — the VIC chip itself does not provide a separated luma/chroma signal, so the only available option is composite.

Compatibility

The author has tested the adapter and confirmed its functionality with the following computers: Commodore VIC-20, Commodore C16, Commodore C64, and Atari 800XL — thanks to the similar pin layout of the A/V port in these models, one PCB supports several different machines. The adapter is not compatible with the Commodore 128 — for the C128, the author has created a separate, dedicated project (C128 A/V Adapter) with a different connector layout.

This solution is designed for owners of the VIC-20 (and also the C16, C64, or Atari 800XL) who want to connect the computer to a modern TV or monitor using a standard composite RCA cable instead of relying on the unusual, factory A/V connector.
